The Hwa Chong Institution String Orchestra (HCISO) was formed in the 1980s as The Chinese High School String Orchestra. Since its inception in the 1980s, the orchestra has gone from strength to strength, winning Gold in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Central Judging for Instrumental Ensembles in 2003, 2005, and 2007. Most recently, the orchestra has obtained a Gold with Honours in the 2011 SYF Central Judging. The orchestra has had an illustrious history under the baton of many conductors, from Mr. Lee Tsu Hock, Mr. Yeo Poong Poh, Mr. Goh Seach Joo and Mr. Chan Yoong-Han. Currently, the orchestra is led by Mr. Trevor Sze. In addition to consistently clinching top awards in the SYF Central Judging, the Hwa Chong Institution String Orchestra has also performed well in other competitions such as the Gothenburg International Music Festival, where it emerged as first runner up in the open category of 2006. Events such as collaborations with other young musicians from countries such as Hong Kong and Australia, various concerts and gigs, and participation in numerous combined camps have ensured that every member of HCISO has had ample opportunities to develop his potential and musical talents.
